Achievements - 2006/2007

Memorial Garden opened on the 30th of August 2006.  The children and community have enjoyed using and visiting the garden.

The children began raising money for the children of Bethlehem.  This took place over a number of months.  By December we were able to hand over a cheque for £2,000.  This was a marvellous achievement.

With the help of the Pupil Council a new style Healthy Tuck Shop is working well and has raised £170 to date.  After consultation with the rest of the children in the school, this will now be spent on playground improvements

The whole school was involved in Road Safety Awareness work. This included all Primary 7 pupils attending Safe Tay Angus and most of them  achieving their Cycling Proficiency theory and practical tests.

Special thanks to The Friends of St Thomas for their Beetle Drive and Race Night, which were both great successes.

Many thanks to Sandy, Gail, Shona and Alison for keeping the  Youth Club  going  at   Arbroath Academy for so many years.  Sadly, it is now no longer running.

In December we had a fabulous time entertaining 11 children from Chernobyl.  We all enjoyed being able to bring Christmas to them in a very special way.

The whole school enjoyed the Pantomime Beauty and the Beast, which was performed by M & M productions to a very high standard.

We entertained nearly 400 people between the school and nursery concerts, with all donations going toward the Bethlehem Charity.

Graffiti Art Project with pupils from Arbroath High School was completed. Two outside walls were beautifully adorned with the word "Respect" and life size figures depicting healthy lifestyles.

In March the school hall underwent a transformation due to the artistic efforts of P 5,6 and 7 as they took part in a Hungry for Success Art Project with Mhairi Nicoll.  A few months later a second art project was carried out  - this time by classes 1, 2 and 3. They created Felt Panels depicting the sea. The artist in charge of this project was Mrs Caroline Earle.

In April St Thomas School was the first school in Angus to be accredited as a Health Promoting School.

In May fourteen children were confirmed by Bishop Vincent Logan and this was followed by their First Holy Communion early in June.

The Sports season ended with the football team winning the Ed Smith Trophy.  They had also finished  runners up in the Football B League. The girls finished third in the Netball league and runners up in the Netball Tournament.

In June the whole school community celebrated Miss Mosley's fabulous forty years of teaching in St Thomas Primary School. The celebrations included an Open Evening in the school for past and present pupils, parents and friends. A great time was had by all. The celebrations culminated in a presentation to Miss Mosley in the school hall.

Achievements - 2007/2008

The Pupil Council took on a new format this year as it included representatives of all classes right down to Nursery.  They will work with Miss Hood to make some decisions to further improve the school.

Early in September another excellent performance by M&M Productions of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was performed in the school.  This was a lovely welcome back for the whole school.

The Active School Coordinator has helped train a group of pupils to become Playground Buddies.  Their main job is to work with P1 and P2 to promote fair play.

St Thomas Primary School now has a brand new Parent Council who are now meeting to help develop an even better partnership between the school and it's parents.  They have even developed their own page on our website.  Parent Council

Another great Fund Raising effort - Change For Charity - resulted in a grand total of £500 going towards Cancer Research.

Pupils from class 7 had the chance to try out their safety skills and knowledge at Safe Angus Day. The activities included house safety, fire, coastguard, road safety, smoking, drugs and countryside safety.

Christmas music at St Thomas took on a new style in a new place.  The whole school travelled by bus to St Thomas Church where each class performed two Christmas pieces before a packed congregation.  Mrs Fenton's class (P6/7) sold all of their Christmas art work at the end of the concert. This raised over £100.  We were able to add to this total and hand over a cheque for £560 to our friends in Bethlehem.

Throughout February and March 2008 the school has been engaged on an Eco Project with the artist, Maureen Crosbie. Six mosaics have been created from ideas supplied by each class. They were made using recyclable materials some of which was brought in by the children.  These have been placed in the Memorial Garden and are part of a improvement plan to make the outside areas even better for all who will use it.  2008 eco project

By March 2008 the school raised £1,171.00 for the charity Lepra.  The charity organisers were amazed at the sum from such a small school.  Our Easter fun Day raised £168.00, which was split as follows, £120.00 for our Country Dancing Group and the remainder will be added to our ongoing SCIAF total.

This month also saw our annual trip to Dalguise, which again, was a super weekend with all the children trying their hand at some great activities and we all had a great time.  Hope you enjoy the pictures!

The big achievement of our summer term was the fantastic display of all our skipping skills which we shared with our friends from Seaton Grove. The whole school came together in the playground and revelled in our enhanced fitness and co-ordination skills whilst our visitors sipped on tea, nibbled on a few biscuits and gave us some ideas from when they played skipping games at school. Even Fr. Jim put in an appearance. Highland Spring supported our health initiative by donating bottles of water for the thirsty athletes.

The Active School Coordinator has helped establish the running of the new activities we can enjoy during playtimes and after school.

Pupils from class 7 had the chance to try out their safety skills and knowledge at Safe Angus Day in September. The activities included fire safety, coastguard, road safety, smoking and countryside safety.

In November some of our P7 pupils also took the opportunity to receive specialised training for their cycling and have passed their Cycling Proficiency Test. We are very grateful to Wanda Gold, Mr McLeish and his team of trainers, for their time and expertise.

Following on from the initial work on the Eco Project with the artist, Maureen Crosbie the six mosaics have been mounted securely round the school exterior.   These have been placed in the Memorial Garden and the nursery garden and are part of a improvement plan to make the outside areas even better for all who will use it.  2008 eco project

Our Learning Festival was a huge success with.....family, friends and councillors turning up on the day. The parental feedback was very positive and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed showing their guests where they were on their learning journeys.

We wrapped up our Christmas term with our Enterprise Project for SCIAF and our Carol Concert in St Thomas Church, both of which were wonderfully supported by our families and friends. Scroll down the page to find a fuller report on our achievements.

Once again we celebrated the children from P4 making the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. We also had a lot of fun coming up for Easter time with decorated egg and bonnet competitions and extra prizes from our wonderful dinner ladies.

We had a very successful visit from HMIE which enabled us to show many of our school's best qualities. A summary of the outcome followed by the full report can be accessed from the link.

Our new friends from Croatia came to spend the day with us and we had a great day watching a pantomime, using the computers, sharing lunch and finally having a mini Highland Games.
